1- US MINT : PROOF SET 1966-1998 ALL U.S. PROOF SETS EVER MADE : DATES FROM 1966 - 1998 : HISTORY OF THE PROOF COINAGE: Proof coins are made from specially polished dies giving them more defined details, sharper rims and a mirror finish. The dies used for making modern proofs are treated with chemicals to make certain parts of the details take on a frosted appearance with polished fields taking on a mirror finish. The term "PROOF" refers to the process of which the coins are made and not the condition of the coin. Most proof coins are double struck. This does not result in doubling that is readily observable but does result in the devices and details being struck fully. The U.S. had largely stopped striking proof coins in 1916, although a few later specimens exist. In 1936, they began producing them again. Today they are of the most collectible coins on the market and are ever increasing in all values of investments. We are offering discounts and encouraging multiple orders.
